Show Me The Money But Don't Expect To See Any Oscars

'Show me the money!' - One of the most famous quotes in Hollywood, and from a film as recent as 1996. The bit about not expecting to see any Oscars was added by me, because you can rest assured that a mainstream feelgood film like 'Jerry Maguire' is not about to win any Oscars.

Can't you?

Well can you imagine the surprise when it got nominated for 3 Oscars, and won Supporting Actor!

Don't get me wrong, I love 'Jerry Maguire', but the annual back slapping jaunt that is The Oscars is a peculiar beast, and the major awards tend to go to serious films, or blockbusters. Evidence the 9 Oscars going to 'The English Patient' in 1996, and the 11 wins for 'Titanic' in 1997!

So, a pleasant surprise indeed to see 'Jerry Maguire' get nominated for Best Picture.

For those who haven't seen the film, here's a brief synopsis...

Jerry Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, is a sports agent that has a 'Damascus moment' about the lack of integrity in his profession. He writes a huge speech about it, which gets him fired. He decides to go it alone, but can only persuade one secretary to go with him, Dorothy (Rene Zelwegger).

His only client is an underachieving loudmouth footballer that he has no choice but to keep on board.

Maguire falls in love with Dorothy but the relationship seems doomed to fail.

The footballer eventually makes it big despite an injury scare, Jerry and Dorothy make up, and everyone lives, er, happily ever after!

I love the film simply because it focuses on core feelgood values - integrity, family support, persistence, and love.

It's a great story, told well with a great cast, it was Rene Zellwegger's breakthrough role and Cuba Gooding, Jr. won the supporting actor Oscar. It stands up to repeat viewings for those very reasons, so to see it get Oscar recognized was one of those 'Thank Goodness for that!' moments.

So, the next time you hear 'Show Me The Money!' you can reply 'Show Me The Oscar!'
